What we do

Shell is a global group of energy and petrochemical companies that aims to meet the world’s growing need for more and cleaner energy solutions in ways that are economically, environmentally and socially responsible.

Our operations are divided into our businesses: Integrated Gas and Upstream, and Downstream, Renewables and Energy Solutions. Our Projects & Technology organisation manages the delivery of Shell’s major projects and drives our research and innovation.

Integrated Gas and Upstream (IGU) explores for and extracts crude oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids. It delivers hydrocarbon products from conventional oil and gas operations, deep-water exploration and production, liquefied natural gas (LNG) activities, and the conversion of natural gas into gas-to-liquids (GTL) fuels and other products.

IGU also markets and transports oil and gas, operating the upstream and midstream infrastructure necessary to deliver them to the market.

Downstream, Renewables and Energy Solutions serves around 32 million customers a day at 46,000 service stations and provides products to more than 1 million business customers across 160 countries. It includes Shell’s Marketing, Chemicals and Products, Renewables and Energy Solutions, all underpinned by strong Trading and Supply capabilities.

The business trades and refines crude oil and other feedstocks into a range of products which are moved and marketed around the world for domestic, industrial and transport use. To provide secure energy today and meet the evolving energy needs of our customers, our offer includes:

• Premium and conventional fuels for road, aviation and shipping;
• Convenience retail and electric-vehicle charging;
• Lubricants, bitumen, sulphur and petrochemicals;
• Low-carbon fuels such as biofuels, renewable natural gas (RNG) and hydrogen;
• Power from wind, solar and natural gas;
• Carbon credits, including from nature-based solutions;
• Reduction and removal of emissions through carbon capture and storage.

Projects & Technology manages the delivery of our major projects and drives research and innovation. It provides technical services for our businesses. It is also responsible for providing functional leadership across Shell in safety and environment, contracting and procurement, wells activities and greenhouse gas management.
