Angelo Costa:
a full life on a sailing boat
Angelo’s sailing began in Forte dei Marmi at the age of 8, following in the footsteps of his father Gino Costa, a six-time Italian champion in the Alpa “S” class. Gino trained Angelo in sailing on several classes: Flying Junior, 420, Alpa S, Flying Dutchman and finally on the Olympic Finn where, at only sixteen years old, Angelo joined the Italian national team.
In 1988 Angelo decided to make sailing his full-time profession, abandoning the Olympic classes and devoting himself to offshore racing as a skipper. He worked for the most important Italian sailing companies, developing many projects for the design of new sails and testing them on racing yachts as skipper.
In his career as a sailmaker, yachtsman and racing sailor in many Olympic classes and on offshore boats, Angelo has also built his knowledge and experience in designing sails to specific customer requirements using different design software for racing and cruising sails. Angelo learned to use the best performing design software tools to create cuts and shapes innovative, selecting a wide range of hi-tech materials, from Dacron to the latest and most sophisticated membranes of carbon.
Angelo made use of his strong background to gather a long list of successful results over the years, both as a skipper and as tactician, participating in the most important national and international offshore races: Championships World and European Championships, Swan Cup, Sardinia, Copa del Rey, Giraglia, 151 miles and many other racing circuits, winning numerous trophies.

Angelo’s experience and expertise, meet the passion and determination of his young and faithful
mate Martino Giannini.
Together they started a new sailing business, creating their own workshop “Sail
Design.”
Even so, Martino Giannini has many years of experience in the world of sailing and motor boating.
His great passion for sailing led him to participate as a sailor in major regattas and he is also a sailing instructor.
In “Sail Design” Martino works with determination combining, in unique and high-quality products, the highest design and manufacturing technologies with the utmost care that only an experienced craftsman can provide.

Sail Design was founded in 2013 by professional sailors Angelo Costa and
Martino Giannini: two partners who are passionate about the world of sailing.
The staff at Sail Design, will be able to design and customize the sail for your boat, developing a
specific design for your sailing needs. In addition, Angelo and Martino will select for you the most
suitable, high-performance and durable materials on the market and will handcraft your project down to the smallest detail.
Thanks to the high performance of its products and the staff’s constant attention to customer needs,
Sail Design has succeeded in establishing itself as an important reference point for the nautical industry.
The passion and experience of the staff
Angelo’s passion for sailing began as a child and, in 1988, became his full-time profession.

In his career as a sailmaker, yachtsman and racing sailor, Angelo has built his knowledge in designing sails according to specific customer needs using performance design software for racing sails and cruising sails.
Angelo’s experience and expertise meet the passion and determination of his young and faithful mate Martino Giannini, sailor and instructor.
And together, in 2013, they start the business “Sail Design” creating a real workshop specializing in designing sails tailored to the needs of the customer, the type of use and the boat.
At Sail Design, Martino works with determination by combining unique, high-quality products with the highest design and manufacturing technologies with the highest level of care that only a skilled craftsman can provide.

Our materials
Sail Design is able to design and produce sails in any type of fabric in keeping with the customer’s needs and according to the use and type of boat.
The fabrics we work with are all of high quality and endowed with characteristics of reliability, durability, high resistance to tearing and impact damage.
We will choose together the most suitable fabric for your sail or cover use: for example, nylon, dacron, carbon, acrylics, aramid fiber fabric, fiberglass fabric, and so on.
The production process
Sail Design has a full-fledged workshop where the staff takes care of the entire process that leads to the realization of custom and tailor-made sails for small and large boats: from design to finishing and to possible testing.
Agreement with the customer on the type of sail in relation to the use and the boat
Survey phase of all measurements
Drawing of sail shape and geometries, of panels, intersections and elements, of which the sail is composed
Design of the sail and panels using specific, high-performance design software
Cutting of the panels through electronic cutting plotter with millimeter engraving (digital electronic stage)
Hand assembly of the different panels using specific glues and double-sided adhesives
Trimming the panels in order to bring the membrane to the required geometry
Sail stitching through specific and technologically advanced machinery
Finishing of the sail and corners with addition of accessories on the sail (batten, toe, garroccio, eyelets, etc.)
Custom packing
Sail quality control and verification at sea where possibly required.
Technologies and software
Sail Design employs the best technologies and software for designing, manufacturing and repairing of sails.
SMAR Azure (3D design software)
Robust and comprehensive software that provides all the tools needed to design a sail and its components. It is able to reproduce volumes, texture, positioning of every single fiber of the sail following the drawing made at the design stage.
Bravearm Plotter (electronic cutting plotter with millimeter engraving)
In order to perform the cutting phase of the panels for the sails, the Sail Design staff uses the automatic Plotter-Cutter with a blade circular and tangential Bravearm: a highly specialized Italian-made technology at the highest level.
We handle the shipping of custom sails and related accessories throughout the country especially to Sicily, Sardinia, Civitavecchia, to Naples, Rimini, Ravenna, etc.
We also ship internationally, working with customers from all over the world both at the European level such as French, Germans, Poles, to the non-European market such as American, Australian and New Zealand.
