About the Company
Torri Lana 1885 Srl
Creative yarns, textured structures, colours and design are the essence of our Torri Lana design fabrics.
Torri Lana is a textile mill with a long history.
Founded in 1885, Torri Lana produces modern fabrics for sofas, armchairs and stylish seats for prestigious companies world-wide.
Torri Lana works side-by-side with creative designers on new projects to make custom personalized fabrics.
A 100-year-old company, a modern and efficient institution. Tradition innovation, history and technology.
More than 130 years ago the Torri family produced merino wool fabrics for esteemed women’s clothing in Gandino. It is the same journey Torri Lana continues today. Since 1980 we produce upholstery fabrics, mainly using cotton made by top quality raw materials and dyes.
Our long history, the new style, machinery and flexible customer service, has given Torri Lana a modern flair.
TORRI LANA A MODERN COMPANY
The heart of the factory is the weaving mill, with 25 modern jacquard.
The production line includes the yarn processing, winding, warping & twisting, quality control and the Research & Development department.
The inclusion of the twisting yarn technology was a significant choice in the recent innovative approach in our production process. Not only does it allow for production of a wide range of fabrics, but also leaves ample room for creativity. We can now create and produce our own yarns within the mill. The combination of base fibres by the twisting process, results in a wide variety of unusual and unique fancy effects. All our raw materials come from the most reliable mills in Italy or Europe in order to offer exclusive and unique quality yarns.
Our reference target is the exclusive furnishing market: we export to top designers world-wide. Our production focuses both on niche and mid-range markets with excellent quality price. In addition to our production on demand, in order to meet an ever-changing global market, our CUT SERVICE programme is constantly available from our warehouse.
TORRI LANA È UN’AZIENDA STORICA
Modern technology is set in a historical factory. Our Torri Lana headquarters is a perfectly conserved rare example of industrial archaeology; an important heritage that illustrates the evolution of textile production process and an example of how economic geography can influence local industry.
The Gandino Valley is well-known for woollen and silk mills with an age-old textile tradition. The Torri Lana family has always played an important role in fabric production and trade in this area. The company was founded in 1885, the same year the mill was built. History shows that a textile activity producing wool fabrics existed in the same area in the 12th century. The mill was initially driven by water that powered the machinery.
The building site is actually due to the availability of fast-flowing water in a stream that runs beside it.
Raw wool fibres from Argentina, Australia and New Zealand were used to produce fabrics for exclusive fine women’s fashion. In the 1900s one of the ‘Rinascente Store’ windows in Milan displayed Torri Lana fabrics. It is worth noting that during World Wars I and II Torri Lana production changed slightly in order to produce military coats and blankets.
From 1970s on Torri Lana has reshaped production by specializing in upholstery fabrics. No longer using only wool, but mainly other natural fibres such as cotton, linen and viscose. Meanwhile, it grows the collaboration with the textile designer Jole Gandolini, who soon becomes the exclusive designer for Torri Lana. It is through Jole Gandolini and Mr. Loredano Tonon that the company get in touch with the great names of Italian architecture, design and furniture entrepreneurs: Gio Ponti, Gianfranco Frattini, Franco Bettonica, Piero Busnelli, the Cassina family, Angelo Mangiarotti, Renata Bonfanti, Maddalena De Padova, Vico Magistretti. These important meetings have allowed Torri Lana to specialize in the field of upholstery coverings, of which it is still a protagonist today as a supplier of fabrics of high technical and aesthetic quality.
A centenary company journey, a modern and efficient reality. Tradition and innovation, history and technology.
Taking a very long history, a history of quality, updating its production, distribution and service. Torri Lana, today, collects and continues the path begun over 130 years ago by the Torri family in Gandino, where merino wool cloths were produced for high-level women’s clothing.
Since 1980 we have been producing furnishing fabrics using mainly cotton, linen and wool yarns, produced with the highest quality raw materials and dyes.
TORRI LANA IS A MODERN COMPANY
In the factory the heart of production is weaving, with 25 modern jacquard looms and dobbies, to which is added the entire yarn processing chain, warping, twisting, quality control and the Research & Development department.
The inclusion of twisting was a decisive choice in the company’s recent innovation process which allowed it to differentiate its products and proved to be a fundamental tool for creativity. Today, in fact, we are able to manage the creation and production of our yarns independently and within the factory: by combining the basic fibers through twisting we are able to create a great variety of effects, creating completely new and inimitable variations. The raw materials we purchase are all of Italian or European origin to safeguard the high quality of the entire supply chain.
Our reference market is that of the highest level of furniture: we export all over the world at the top of world design. Our productions are high-end, but we also have customers who make large quantities in the mid-range to whom we are able to supply products with an excellent quality/price ratio. Furthermore, to respond to an increasingly fragmented demand, alongside made-to-order production we offer a line of products that are always available in stock and which we sell per cut, so that we can test our quality without constraints and large investments.
Torri Lana
TORRI LANA IS A HISTORICAL COMPANY
Modern technology in a historic factory. The Torri Lana headquarters represents a rare example of perfectly preserved industrial archaeology, an authoritative witness capable of describing the evolution of production processes and how a production site is closely linked to the territory that hosts it.
Val Gandino has always been an area of wool and silk mills with a thousand-year-old textile tradition, and the Torri family has always been involved in this type of production and trade. The company began in 1885, the year the current headquarters were built, but historical research shows that as early as the 12th century, in the same place, there were textile activities for the production of woolen cloth. Back then the driving force was water, which made all the machinery turn.
The location of the building is due precisely to the availability of water from a stream that flows alongside the structure.
The wools used in the company came from Argentina, Australia and New Zealand and, as mentioned, were used to produce woolen cloth for quality women’s clothing: already in the early 1900s one of the windows of La Rinascente in Milan was dedicated to Ermenegildo Zegna and the other right in Torri Lana. In the years of the First and Second World War, production was converted or integrated with military supplies: cloth was made for army coats and also blankets.
Once the conflict was over, the production of clothing collections resumed and that of blankets continued.
From the 70s onwards, production was definitively converted to furnishing fabrics, no longer exclusively wool-based, but also starting to use cotton, linen and viscose. However, mainly natural fibres. And the collaboration with the textile designer Jole Gandolini intensifies, who soon becomes an exclusive designer for Torri Lana.
It is through Jole Gandolini and Loredano Tonon that the company comes into contact with the great names of Italian architecture, design and entrepreneurship in the furniture sector: Gio Ponti, Gianfranco Frattini, Franco Bettonica, Piero Busnelli, Cassina family, Angelo Mangiarotti, Renata Bonfanti, Maddalena De Padova, Vico Magistretti. These important meetings have allowed Torri Lana to specialize in the field of upholstery coverings, of which it is still a protagonist today as a supplier of fabrics of high technical and aesthetic quality.

ciodera
One of the emblems of Torri Lana’s long textile tradition is the Ciodera, an ancient wooden structure that was used to dry woolen clothes in the sun, wind and protected from the rain.
Still perfectly preserved today and part of the heritage of our factory, the Ciodera becomes the inspiration for a collection that combines know-how with naturalness, with the ingenuity of creating innovative fabrics which however retain the flavor of things done well.
Hemp, union of natural materials with plain and striped aspects. Tweed and printed yarns that express the continuous search for materials and aspects that characterize the textures. Large creative designs to amaze and attract. Bouclé that evolve into a mouliné and multicolored effect.
Textile knowledge, design and colors come together to continue a beautiful product story linked to the territory and true sustainability values.
In 2015 Torri Lana was the first company to launch the Paradise article on the market, a beautiful bouclé fabric with a high percentage of wool. Extremely soft, versatile, modern. Today, a constant commitment made of studies, experiments and investments in the production of yarns has reached its peak, giving rise to the BOUCLE’ Collection.
The product, which is the real market trend today, has evolved into countless different types, in which the natural shine of the wool fiber is expressed in a vast range of colours; new blends, with chenille, tweed effects, weaves, designs, natural or washed finishes, and different yarn curl sizes to satisfy all fantasies and needs.
Volume, softness, brightness, depth, colors from natural to burnt, possibility of combining plains with patterns. A highly versatile product, a collection to be explored for an immersive experience, in which to rediscover the unmistakable Torri Lana style in a completely new light.

Hence the need to promote feelings of tranquility and protection through natural fabrics with exceptional performance.
The need for increasingly high-performance fabrics translates into the LIVING series of yarns, where a perfect balance of natural, cellulose and technical fiber allows the achievement of surprising standards.
The result is perceived by the natural appearance, the soft feel and the fluid drape but above all by the exceptional abrasion performance. Our technical ability as expert spinners, combined with the innovative LINEN-based blend, are the strong points that allow us to reach the full potential also with regards to fire performance. The fabrics surprisingly lend themselves to both the RESIDENTIAL and CONTRACT markets, obtaining the main certifications including the BS5852 Cigarette and Match standards as well as the CAL TB 117:2013 standard.
The “Living YARN Performance” family is extremely flexible in typologies and structures, with the presentation of multiple articles ranging from perfect PLAINS, to TEXTURES and interpretations of JACQUARD PATTERNS. FIBERS, YARN AND STRUCTURES perfectly summarize the concept of NATURAL PERFORMANCE:

OUTDOOR COLLECTIONS
A line of furnishing fabrics based on fine HEMP yarns, the perfect trait-d’union between the interior and exterior of the home.
Hemp is one of the oldest botanical fibres, its origins date back to 6000 years ago; grown without the use of fertilizers and chemical products, it is the most suitable natural textile material for outdoors because it is resistant to the most extreme weather conditions. This is why man has exploited it over the millennia to make ropes, sails and tents.
Highly protective, it filters 95% of UV rays, is resistant to wear and abrasion, has high toughness and dimensional stability when wet. In clothing it is particularly appreciated because it is pleasant to the touch, fresh and has the highest breathability in nature.
CANAPA Outdoor fabrics are treated with a special “ECO” finishing; the raw fabric is washed with a natural soap extracted from lemon fermentation to cleanse any type of wax and oil.
A special high-concentration silicone treatment applied to the surface creates an invisible waterproof layer; its molecular structure 2000 times smaller than water gives the fabric a mechanical waterproofing: the drops of water dance on much smaller spheres which do not allow them to penetrate through the fabric.
The “ECO” treatment is PFOA-free, resistant to washing, safe in contact with the skin and respectful of the environment.
NATURAL PERFORMANCE
For over 50 years, in a small valley outside Bergamo, Torri Lana 1885 has elevated the art of spinning and weaving yarn-dyed furnishing fabrics. The NATURAL PERFORMANCE collection reflects this history and experience, illustrating our commitment and belief in the power of natural fibers to improve our lives.
All items in the collection achieve high Martindale abrasion resistance and meet many residential and hospitality fire resistance requirements around the world.
The impressive performance of these fabrics demonstrates why natural fibers have been and will remain an important part of our daily lives.
The predominant use of renewable raw materials makes our fabrics natural and sustainable.
The NATURAL PERFORMANCE program is supplied with a cut service, ideal for
upholstered furniture manufacturers, architects and designers involved in designing
homes and hospitality structures.
FRATTINI COLLECTION
Since the 1970s, Jole Gandolini, historic fabric designer and weaver, has collaborated with Torri Lana exclusively since 1983. Jole Gandolini tells us: “I, as a beginner, went to Gio Ponti with my case of samples, and Ponti told me: “… go to Frattini…”. And Gianfranco, the Frattini, told me: “…we have to go and see the Cesare (Cassina)…”. Thus began our decades-long collaboration, moving from upholstered furniture to interior architecture.”
The “Gianfranco Frattini Collection” fabric line developed by Torri Lana 1885 in collaboration with the Gianfranco Frattini Archive, reveals five designs created by the Maestro in the 1970s, unpublished and never woven before, alongside four patterns that architect used to use in his furnishing projects and today proposed in new color combinations designed by his daughter Manuela Frattini Magnusson.
The eight drawings recall the names of the most famous public places created by the architect: Saint Andrew’s, Stork, Spinnaker, Carillon, Scafandro, Roseberry, Scaletta and Radetzky.
